Reflections – Design

How we started…

In Design, we reflected upon real world issues that we face and were tasked with creating a PSA (Public Service Announcement) that would be printed out as a poster. Issues ranged from drunk driving, to mental health, to reducing use of plastic straws.

This is where all design projects start after brainstorming. Laid out with a color scheme and other images related to the project as inspiration. In this case, other drunk driving PSAs. This serves as a place we can go back to for reference as well as being able to get a good sense of what the color scheme would look like.

From the Mood Board we turned out ideals into a final product. A month or two before we started brainstorming for this project, news had come out about a Mother and her 14yr old son. They were killed in a head-on collision involving a wrong-way driver who was drunk. This hit hard for me as it occurred on a segment of highway I frequently drive. This PSA was inspired by my emotions and thoughts surrounding the collision. Hence, the dark and moody color scheme and theme.

This piece was done using Adobe Illustrator. We used the pen tool and layers…many, many layers. The truck alone has 11 layers.

Where we go…

This unit in Design taught me many things, both technically and about myself and how I work with creative projects. Thought out the unit, and working on the Design project, I learned to value when to mark something as complete. When working on the PSA project, I had a lot of trouble with deciding when to just call the PSA complete. I kept feeling like it wasn’t enough or stuff was missing when in reality it was just fine. I also learned to how valuable having a color scheme is and how to value having one available when working on future pieces.
