Tell a Lie

I would consider this photo of the moon to be deceiving because I used a wide-angle lens to capture it. The wide angle lens distorted the edge of the frame and made the moon look smaller than it would appear to a human eye. I remember taking this photo and wondering why the moon looked …

Leading Lines (Food)

This is a photo of a chocolate lava cake that I got for my birthday at one of my favorite restaurants, True Food Kitchen. Although the dessert is on the right third of the frame, the angle of the candle flame leads one’s eye closer to the center of the frame. The effect is the …

Stranger

I took this photo in the redwood grove at Shoup Park. The girl, the subject of the picture, seems as if she’s hiding behind the tree, or as if the camera has caught her. I believe that this candid style of photo is similar to the way that humans feel when we see strangers. Those …

Serenity

I photographed my friend laying down in a tree to portray serenity because I think that being in nature never fails to bring a sense of calm. Moreover, my friend’s position suggests that she feels relaxed and content. In Adobe Photoshop, I added a warming Photo Filter because I tend to associate serenity with warmth.

Rule of Odds

I took this photo to represent the rule of odds because it portrays three main subjects: the log, the river, and the tree. These three subjects create a triangle in the photograph that balances out the composition and leads the viewer’s eye around the photo.

Aging

To answer this prompt, I chose to photograph lichen on a fallen stick. This represents aging to me because this lichen covered stick came from a tree, which once grew from a sapling and a seed. I desaturated the green grass in this photo using the Quick Selection Tool in Adobe Photoshop because I felt …

#NoFilter

I unfortunately did not have my camera with me when I took this photo, so I just used my phone. I positioned the girl and her dog in the bottom left corner of the foreground, and I let the magnificent sunset dominate the rest of the composition. The colors of the sky were so beautiful …

Negative Space

I took this photo at Byrne Preserve. I made the photograph black and white using Adobe Photoshop because I think that the lack of color emphasizes the negative space and the contrast between the hills and the sky.

Shadow

The subjects of this photo include the shadows of a plastic skeleton decoration and the pothos plant hanging on my hammock. I wanted to depict the natural decomposition and rebirth that occurs in death through the skeleton in juxtaposition to the living plant. In Adobe Photoshop, I used multiple Screen layers and the levels tool …

Anonymous

I decided to put a red “X” over my face in the mirror to portray this theme because it turns the mirror, which typically connotes self-reflection, into a surface to cover oneself. I also wore a dark cap and shirt. I used a slow shutter speed to give the subject a ghost-like effect because I …
