Deadly Sins

I chose to photograph the Hollywood sign when I was in LA for the “deadly sins” prompt because a lot of independent artists and the general public view Hollywood as the epitome of greed, lust, and pride. I think there are a lot of negative connotations surrounding Hollywood due to its dying creativity, public scandals, …

Film Noir

I believe that this photograph is similar to film noir because I utilized harsh leading lines and contrast in the composition. Furthermore, I used a black and white filter in Photoshop to replicate the film style. Although there is no human subject in my photo, I think that the high-contrast lighting on the water and …

Long Shutter Speed Exposure

I took this photo at a New Year’s party. I used a long shutter speed and panned the camera across the room instead of placing it on a tripod because I wanted to keep the foreground in focus and make the background blurry. This photo represents the start of the new year for me because …

Silhouettes

I photographed the silhouette of my mom at the beach. Her dark shadow emphasizes the vibrant sunset in the background. I chose to center my mom in the frame in order to create a symmetrical composition.

Color Without Color

This is a photograph of a bouquet of daffodils. Although I used Photoshop to remove the vibrant yellow color of the flowers, the high contrast still allows the daffodils to pop.

Friends and Family

This is a photo of my friend Hannah. I believe that this picture captures Hannah’s shy personality because her face is concealed from the camera. Hannah is quite introverted, but she is very funny and open once you get to know her.

Your Culture

This is a painting that I created with watercolors and a pen. I believe it represents how my culture is really a mix of multiple cultures- Chinese, southern, American- because the colors bleed into each other and overlap. Furthermore, I depicted dragon in my artwork, which symbolizes fortune, power, and strength in Chinese culture.

Flowers

I photographed the wildflowers in my front yard. We scattered the seeds for these wildflowers many years ago, and I love seeing them regrow and blossom each spring. The flowers, including poppies, California poppies, and bachelor buttons, truly add a pop of color to our garden, and they remind me of my childhood.

Stranger

I took this photo in the redwood grove at Shoup Park. The girl, the subject of the picture, seems as if she’s hiding behind the tree, or as if the camera has caught her. I believe that this candid style of photo is similar to the way that humans feel when we see strangers. Those …

Aging

To answer this prompt, I chose to photograph lichen on a fallen stick. This represents aging to me because this lichen covered stick came from a tree, which once grew from a sapling and a seed. I desaturated the green grass in this photo using the Quick Selection Tool in Adobe Photoshop because I felt …
