Documentary

“How do you creatively and truthfully portray a significant person, group, place, idea, or issue in the community?”

Introduction And Reflection

In the Junior Documentary Project, we were tasked with portraying an intriguing person, group, place, idea, or issue. To do so we gathered primary and secondary research sources to develop our perspective on a subject’s significance in the community and/or world. We wrote a research-based paper in English, that helped us create a magazine and animation. In the unit, we mainly focused on narrative-style journalism.

For my Documentary Project I first started with the idea of street fashion. I was curios by videos I saw online of Harajuku and wanted to know more about the culture and significance behind it. After talking to my first Interviewee, she discussed the topic of fast fashion and how much of an impact it makes on the world and I became more intrigued about it causing me to change my subject. I really valued getting to learn more in depth about a topic that I never really knew existed. As I talked to more people and did my own research I learned how big of a problem fast fashion was. I found it strange how not many people knew about it even though conservation was a very big issue right now. The more I learned the more it made me realize how serious of an issue this was.

For our English class, we were asked to write a research paper about our topic. For my essay I wrote about fast fashion and its effects. I talked about both the ethical and environmental effects it had on the planet. I also detailed what we can do to help. Click the photo to read the essay.

Animation

In animation class, we were asked to make an animation about our topic using audio from the interviews that we did. We first started by drawing a storyboard and a color scheme. We then made an animatic based off our storyboards, and then we made our final animation.

This is the color scheme I created for my documentary animation.
This is the first page of my storyboard. At the top I wrote about what I wanted to portray through my animation.
This is the second page of my storyboard.

Final Animation

This animation was my final product. As you can see it is very different from my initial idea. I had a lot of fun during this unit and got to talk to a couple of people who were both very passionate on this subject.

REAL Magazine Article

In Digital Media, we were asked to write an article on our topic using our research essay from English. Click on the photo below to read my article.
