Gothic

Noir films are defined largely by their dark tone, dark composition, morally ambiguous or impure characters, and temporal setting. One of their most defining features, however, is their setting in an urban environment, usually a dense and seedy one.

Noir calls back to Gothic imagery of grotesquely spiring towers, illuminated by pale streetlight and choking the streets in dark shadow. Faint lights glimmer in the windows of colossal skyscrapers, punctuating three-dimensional sea of darkness
