About this Podcast

Here’s a quick little riddle. I am used every few sentences in casual conversation, but when writing essays I am taboo. I pop up in movies, songs, and television shows but no one seems to notice. I am associated with stupidity but my definition is diverse. What am I? I am the word “like”. This podcast dives into the origin story of “like”. Where did it come from? Why is it used so often? What is the true definition of “like”? Listen to find out.

Podcaster Bio

Hi, I’m Kira. I’m currently a senior attending Freestyle Academy. It’s pretty rad. I spend most days expressing my creativity through my drawings, outdoors playing lacrosse, or wasting time on my phone scrolling through various social media feeds. One day while exercising my thumb muscles, I came across quite an interesting video on the word “like”. My first thought after watching this video was “geez I know I say ‘like’ at least every five seconds”. After discovering my new found awareness of the word “like”, and trying desperately not to say it, I decided to call up my friend Sarah to brainstorm this podcast.

Introduction Section

Hmmm. What is my goal for this podcast project which has been assigned to me by the one and only Mr. Greco? In all honesty I would say the goal of the podcast project is to give my peers and I, the second semester seniors, a way of expressing themselves in a form of communication that is uncommon in an English class. Podcasting is vast and diverse in topics. It can be storytelling, interviews, dissection of a subject for example. I took inspiration from a podcast called “Let’s Talk About Myths Baby!” but I mainly just wanted this podcast to transfer the energy between Sarah and I. Listening to it now feels a bit cringy, but who doesn’t cringe at the recording of their voice and immediately want to apologize to everyone who’s heard them speak.

Reflection

I valued the freedom of this project. To be fair that’s what I value about most Freestyle projects. Most projects at Freestyle are done on your own but there are often chances to work with a partner. This offered me a challenge I gladly accepted. Pairing up with someone would normally be a lot more difficult in terms of scheduling but since we are experiencing a global pandemic, making time to call on the phone and work together wasn’t that big on an issue. Freestyle projects that require me to record anything overall just make me uncomfortable. However by working with a partner I felt obligated not to let her down. This ended up somewhat improving my recording skills I would say.
