Narrative Visual Perspective in Animation

For the narrative unit in animation, we used our 3D models we made earlier to practice and create animations.

Lipsync Animation

Like we did the previous year with 2D animation, our first assignment to prepare for the narrative animation was a lipsync. We chose a short audio clip, and then animated our models to match them. To do this, we first had to create multiple copies of the model in Maya, and adjust each of their faces to match verbal noises. With this done, they could be combined into one model, whose facial expressions could then be adjusted.

We then chose an audio clip and animated the character speaking to it.

Walk, Run, and Jump Cycles

Along with the lipsync animation, we created three more practice animation; one of the character walking, one of them running, and one of them jumping.

We also practiced animating our characters using motion capture data.

Group Narrative Animation

Our final assignment of the unit was to create a short narrative animation in groups of 3 to 4 people. I was in a group with Jack Orrock and Emma Mell. Using all 3 of our character models, we eventually decided on the plot: the narrative would follow my character, Reina, attempting to hunt and eat Jack’s character, Miho, who remains oblivious, while Emma’s character, Victoria, tries to stop Reina. Before animating, we created a short storyboard.

We then started animating – as you can see in the storyboard, we were each assigned a few animations to do, which we would then combine in After Effects, though we had to cut some of them for time.
