Music Recording

For the music recording project, we found local musicians, and recorded and produced a song. We learned different aspects of audio production, like EQs, reverb, compressors, etc., and we were able to include these skills into the song production.

For my song, I decided to work with Saumya Anand, a singer and songwriter. She is currently a junior and does choir and theatre. I’ve known her for a couple years, and knew pretty instantly that she would be the perfect musician for this project!

ARTIST STATEMENT:

Saumya – I picked that song because Daniel Caesar is one of my favorite RnB artists- his music is very unique, blending alternative and RnB together and has been a huge influence to me. RnB is my favorite genre of music because of its soulful, raw, and storytelling quality and I loved recording it and performing it, especially this song because its message is very sweet and about choosing over and over, despite hardships, to be there for the people you love. I chose it to give myself some variety between the musical theater repertoire I’ve been consumed with recently for pre-college audition season, and to just be able to perform one of my favorite songs. Though I have recorded in studios before, this experience helped me become more comfortable playing guitar and singing at the same time, being able to get better at doing both simultaneously and still staying in the moment and staying true to the heart of the song.

Lulu – I had a lot of fun with this project, it was super cool to be on the producing side of everything, and apply all the practice we did to a song that I’m very proud of! It was very useful learning how to work with other people, as that is something I will likely do in my career outside of school. I also practiced with directing people, as I directed Saumya what buttons she could press to adjust volume/how to help set up the instruments. After working with Saumya, it was also super fun to edit the audio, though I got a little confused at times. There is so much you can do with music production, and that can get a bit overwhelming, but overall I’m really happy with how it turned out.

Reflection:

Overall, I had a lot of fun working with Saumya. She is an extremely talented artist and getting to record with her was such a memorable experience! This project helped me learn how to plan and organize working with different people, and I will definitely take that skill with me in my future career.
