Funny Image Compositions:
In Digital Media, before we did the Surreal Composition, as a practice with our composition skills we made funny images, combining at least two images into one. During class we learned photo comping skills, like learning how to make good selections and apply clipping masks to make multiple images cohesive into one. We practiced these skills with the Funny Composition, and eventually used them for the Surreal Composition as well.

Multi-Layered Art Project
For this next project, we made 3D multi-layered art derived from our treatment from English. We had a few different options – light box art, stacked wood art, and wood ring art. We made the design of our piece in Illustrator, it was then laser-cut layer by layer, and finally we assembled all of the pieces to create our final piece. I decided to do stacked wood art, and for my design, I took inspiration from the end of our story, where the women in the story work together to dismantle the system that oppressed them. They are able to flourish into themselves and discover who they really are as people when every second of theirs isn’t controlled.

Artist Statement:
After hearing the options for this project, I immediately knew that I wanted to do stacked wood art. In english, we had our worldbuilding unit where we created a detailed outline for a story. I worked with Rachel and Jane and we made a story called “The Highest Bid”, where women are sold to the highest bidding man for marriage, every aspect of their lives controlled. When coming up with my idea, I decided to focus on the end of the story, where women come together to dismantle the oppressive system. Flowers are a symbol of femininity and growth so I used them in my design. The rest of the design was pretty simple, however once I started it in Illustrator, it was much harder.
It was difficult for me to visualize how each layer would turn out physically which made it hard to create, but ultimately I was able to and I’m really proud of how it turned out! I really enjoyed the gluing process because it was super satisfying seeing it transform from Illustrator, to pieces of wood, to the final product!
