Documentary

Introduction

For this project we were asked to find somebody who we thought was significant and document them thoroughly

For my documentary I wanted to research about medical technology, and in my research I found a interesting company called Melio Labs. It’s a company that is developing solutions to the very pressing medical problem of sepsis and antibiotic resistance by developing significantly faster testing methods.

English

For English, we were asked to make our documentary into the form of a research paper that was 5 to 7 pages long. We started by  contacting the people we wanted to interview, and scheduling to interview them. The first person I interviewed was the founder and CEO, Dr Mirdu Sinha, who gave me a very useful insight into how and why she started Melio and how their technology works. I also interviewed their director of microfluidics Dr Luc Bousse, who gave me a more detailed explanation on the workings of their technology. He also gave me an insight into the company culture of Melio and how he got there in life.

Digital Media

In digital media we were asked to turn the text that we had made into a magazine article. First, we had to learn how to use InDesign. So to do that, we copied a article from a senior student who had an exemplary article. In this way, we could not only learn how to use InDesign but also learn from the best when it comes to the design itself. After we did all this, we had to basically do the same thing but with our own content. Luckily,  as a design student I already had all the content from making my book.  All I had to do was arrange it. This entailed a somewhat large number of things, including photos, graphic elements, pull quotes, and the already written text of the paper. It took some time to get this all done

Design

InDesign we were asked to turn the English paper we had made into a book where we had to design each page with graphic elements, photos and also text.  The first thing that I did was take all the photos for it, and make all of the graphic elements. They were very medical themed because that’s what my essay is about. After I did that, I had to arrange it all in InDesign. All of these things, including taking photos and making graphic elements, interviewing people, and laying out the book took about 3 months. After that time I had a 34 page book with my paper in it. After 3 months of work and a significant amount of effort we had the book physically printed. It looked very nice with my designs in it.

Dr. Midru Sinha is the founder and CEO of Melio Labs and a brilliant mind developing ground breaking new technology

Reflection

Overall this project was very much a challenging experience, but also quite enjoyable. I would say that the thing I’m most proud of is the book that I designed, because  it’s the pinnacle form of my documentary paper. Whoever may be reading this thank you for taking an interest in my work.
