Narrative Visual Perspective in Design

For narrative two in design we did two projects that were connected to our World building either quite directly or somewhat indirectly by still being related to a narrative both of these projects were extremely useful in honing my narrative craft

Product Design

For our first project in design during narrative 2 we did product design where we started by making a logo based on a fictional product we thought of and then branch that out into a mock-up product and a magazine ad. I decided to make a pickle brand because they are one of my favorite foods and I thought it would be very cool. I also wanted to do anthropomorphism so I made the pickle anthropomorphic. To tie it together I made a fun pun on my name i called Pickle10 And I made the anthropomorphic pickle zero for the best combo.

Moodboard

I started by making a Moodboard to get the vibe of my project so l i took the images that i thought fit the vibe i also found a font the would look good with it too and combined them all together with a color scheme to make a moodboard

Logo

For the logo I wanted to do something somewhat mid-century modern but obviously still pickle themed So I used a pickle silhouette as the background for my text In the purple color to make it really stand out from the green. As I mentioned earlierI made the anthropomorphic pickle as part of the text

These are my original concepts As you can tell I went with the first one you can really see how much it grew from concept. The other two didn’t work out because I really like pickle chips and I thought that the shaping wasn’t very good.

Label

For the label I thought that the combination of the colors from the logo and the maroon background would go really well together But I also needed to add in The slogan of the brand Which I decided to spruce up with the funky shape behind chips And then to bring it all together I put the little box around it

Magazine AD

For our third project in design we were asked to design a product for which we would make a logo, a label, a magazine ad, and merch. For my product I chose to make gourmet pickles called Pickle10, which is a clever pun on my name Maarten. I chose pickles because I find them very delicious and I love making them at home. The process of this project was quite a long one, coming in at just over 2 1/2 months for the whole thing. We started it by sketching the design of our logos. I wanted to include an anthropomorphic pickle in the logo, so I made him take the place of the zero in 10. I also wanted more pickles in it, so I also had a non-anthropomorphic pickle be the background for the word itself. I designed this whole logo in Adobe Illustrator after I had sketched it. For the next part of the project we were asked to make a container label with our logo, which I also designed in Illustrator. It also included required text about the volume of the hypothetical jar and a tagline about the product for it. I chose a color scheme that was very heavy on the maroon and purple along with my logo, which was already purple and green. For the third and final part of the project we were tasked with making a magazine ad for this product in which we had to make a mock up of in my case, a jar and then design it into a background where I took a very large 10 and made it slightly transparent in the background, with a slogan curved around the top of the jar and the name at the bottom. All this was also done in Illustrator. Overall, this project was long and arduous, but produced a result that I’m very happy with. It definitely helped me improve my Illustrator skills.

Worldbuilding Movie Poster

For our second project in design we made a movie poster based on our World building Project in english. I wanted to really encompass the feeling we had been creating in the story of our World building project into design to make the poster That truly captures the essence of the story

Moodboard

I started by making a moodboard to get the vibe of my project i took the images that i thought fit the vibe and also the pieces of media i was inspired by in the Worldbuilding i also found a font the would look good with it too and combined them all together with a color scheme to make a moodboard

In a remote forest of Portland, Oregon, two brothers named Reuben and Jonah Andrews get separated from their camping troop, end up getting lost in a fluke storm, and seek shelter when they find a cave. Inside the cave, they find an ancient time portal and get transported 300 years in the future. When they emerge from the portal, the forest is gone, and what they see now is a wasteland, with large machinery scraping the land. They have little time to feel shocked because the half-bots are on them. With the help of their new robot friend named Cleo, they join together to put a stop to this madness and save the world.

My process for making this poster started in Illustrator but after some time and work,  I decided to switch to Photoshop to revitalize my creativity which was falling short. In retrospect, though, I could have done all the things I did in Photoshop in Illustrator as well. When I switched to Photoshop, the first thing I did was restart the work I did in Illustrator. It was not very much, just the title and the background color. Once I started in Photoshop, I decided that I wanted to make a clipping mask for the portal I was making,  in order to give the impression of a portal in a cave. Initially, I made the shape of the clipping mask jagged, but I eventually changed it to a more cog-like shape to give the impression of nature versus technology. For the background, I was inspired by the poster for the Alfred Hitchcock movie “Vertigo” which has two converging spirals as the main focal point. In my case the main focal point was already the cog shaped eye but I included a spiral similar to Hitchcock into my background to give the illusion of a sinking effect. I also chose to go with distressed lettering to emphasize the dire nature of the future seen through the portal. For the last part of the poster I chose the tagline “The Future Sees You” to emphasize the somewhat eerie nature of the story. All in all, I’m very proud of my product for this project.
