In this photo I captured a reflection, that of fire. To me it’s intriguing that a material could let light through so clearly and still be reflective as well. I set up the angle to get as much of both the real fire and the reflection as well, and then I saw that since there was glass on both sides of the fire, there’s also a third reflection which I thought was a really neat effect.
The goal of this photo was to highlight how the composition of human faces is asymmetrical by forcing symmetry on an image as is ‘expected’ and showing how strange it actually looks. In my case, I used my own face; I took a photo of myself in the mirror and then flipped it. Since I couldn’t see through the camera, it took a few tries to even get it aimed at my face. I then put it in photoshop and used masking and transformations to flip half of my face. I tried my best to get the ears, neck, and eyebrows to not have any jumps even though they didn’t line up. In the end, it was surprising to see the differences in my eyes because although I’d noticed previously that they behave very differently from each other when I smile, I was not smiling in my photo.
