A Different Shade of Grey ~ Diptych

A Diptych is two images that are placed next to one another in attempt to convey a hidden idea or secret that is told between the two photos. In my two photos, I felt they built off eachother to represent the idea of lonliness and isolation, which are depressing words I use to describe some characterists of a conformist. I decided to take one photo in nature and one in a confined household to add diversity to the two photos as if it were two different scenarios. I explained what each one meant down below.

The subject of my diptych conveys the topic of “conformity is the self-betrayal of one’s well being”. I chose these pictures because I felt that it represents the idea of conformity, and an individual being stuck in such a state.

The picture of the trees represents the idea of two different types of people: the dry, and practically dead tree being the mundane conformists, and the beautiful, lively tree being the non-conformists. I purposely placed the sun in the top right corner to show that people (the sun) seem to notice the unique individuals before the so called “robots” of the poem.

The second photo of the shoes, two of which are colored with one remaining black and white like the rest of the photo, were representing the idea of being stuck in conformity. The fact that it is black and white shows it is not different from the rest of the picture, unlike the other two pairs of shoes in which you can notice their diversity. I purposely kept the background a solid black color to show that the idea of conformity is plain and uninteresting. This method was used to amplify the different colors found in the shoes that weren’t beat up, but rather new.
