Lightbox Project

The lightbox is a multi-layered paper box that is backlit in order to show the layers. We were instructed to create it in Illustrator and then Mr. Flo would cut out all the layers in order to assemble the physical piece.

Artist Statement

My key inspirations for this project are the lofi girl on YouTube, as well as cityscapes in general.  I wanted to create a forced perspective by changing the building size and letting light pass through.  I was inspired by the background of the Lofi Girl livestream, she is sitting in an apartment with a view of the city in the background.

Some challenges that I came across with this project was the teamwork aspect, it was a little challenging to split up the work when it was the same project.  We overcame this by working on the same computer and sharing ideas.  When we came across problems we could work through them by each trying to find out a solution.  I am really proud of the way that the foreground came out, the girl sitting on the bed is a detail that doesn’t really stand out as much as I had hoped but it looks really good.

One problem that we came across was the light transmission through all the layers.  There was not many holes in the bottom of the buildings so I wasn’t sure if the light was able to make it through all the paper, but we were able to create gaps between the buildings that were hidden when looking at it from the front, which allowed the light to have a more clear path to light up all of the buildings.
