Photo Blog #43: Film Noir

Original Photo Info: ISO: 3200, Shutter Speed: 1/100, Aperture: 13

I haven’t ever dived into the genre of Film Noir much in my art, but when this photo blog prompt was assigned, I was excited about the idea of capturing a place where a scene in a Film Noir movie could take place. I think the fact that the depth of this staircase is left ambigious makes the viewer feel like they’re going to see something they’re not supposed, like they’re hiding from someone at the bottom of the stairs.

I like the geometry and perspective of this photo, how there are a lot of leading lines, and the lighting and repetition of shapes creates an interesting sense of depth. The ISO of this picture was pretty high, but I was able to give it a grimier look when I adjusted the Black-and-White balance in Photoshop so that the filter turned the red values darker, somehow inverting some of the lighting in parts of the image.
