Facial Symmetry

My step-brother, Eli, looking very symmetrical 1/256 f4 ISO12800

For this prompt, we were asked to use Adobe Photoshop to create an edited version of a profile photo to show perfect symmetry. I decided to use a picture of my step-brother, Eli (a current Freestyle Junior), in front of his bed. I think the photos came out a little silly, but I still think creating symmetrical photos was a cool skill to learn that will come in handy later down the line.

Your Culture

Turkish hand made glass art at my house 1/330 f4 ISO6400

To me, my culture means a lot of different things. I wasn’t sure at first how to interpret the prompt, but I decided to capture Turkish glass art, which captures both my Turkish identity, something I’m very proud of and want to learn more about, as well as art, something that is a big part of my life and my family’s lives. This dining set includes a lot of symbols and colors that are really important in Turkish culture, such as pomegranates and deep blues. It’s in a glass display case right in front of our kitchen, and I always love passing by and admiring the work inside, specifically the plate in the middle.

Serenity

Our garden, filled with bonsai, succulents, and other various plants

For this week, we were asked to take a picture based on what serenity means to us. My idea of serenity is probably sitting alone and watching cartoons for hours, but that would make for a pretty boring picture, so I instead opted to take a picture of the garden, which is my dad’s place of serenity. He spends most of the day outside listening to music and tending to his plants. He’s recently taken up bonsai, which he finds really relaxing.

Rule of Odds

My dad, Ozzie (left), my brother, Ronan (middle), and my stepbrother, Eli (right)

For this week, we were challenged to take a picture using to Rule of Odds. I knew I was gonna use my family in the picture, but I wasn’t sure what I wanted the composition to look like, so my dad suggested having him and Eli look at each other while Ronan looks at the camera (I told him to make the face though). I think it turned out really funny so I’m definitely happy with it.

Aging

My stuffed elephant, Elephy, lying on my bed

For this weeks theme of aging, I decided to photograph my stuffed elephant, Elephy (a genius name, I know). I’ve had Elephy since I was 7 months old, and all those years together have definitely left her a little worn down. She was bright pink and fully stuffed when we first got her, and now she’s pale and floppy. I think she represents both aging in the physical and emotional sense, as she has signs of physical aging, but she’s also been with me as I’ve aged and grown over the years.

#NoFilter

My stepmom, Elina, at dinner

This week, we had the freedom of photographing anything we wanted, so long as there was no editing or presets used. I decided to take a picture of my stepmom, Elina. I really like this picture, I think the warm colors look really nice, and I like how it’s perfectly focused on her face.

Negative Space

Tree outside my house on a sunny day

This weeks theme was personally really challenging for me. I’m not a huge fan of minimalism or blank space, so it was really hard for me to take any pictures that I really ended up liking. I ended up deciding on this photograph of the tree in my front garden with the blue sky. Again, not a huge fan, but I think it turned out nice enough.

Shadow

My dad’s shadow in the garden

This week, we challenged to create a compelling story using only shadows. I took a picture of my dad posing outside, and although I don’t think it’s super compelling, I still like how it turned out.

Small, faceless statue

Anonymity is often associated with facelessness, so I decided to take that literally with this week’s picture, and capture this small, faceless ceramic statue.

Center Frame Portrait

Poppy, lounging on my desk chair

For this weeks photo, I decided to capture my cat, Poppy, on my chair. I like to think that she comes and sits here when I’m at school or work because she misses me, although, knowing cats, that’s probably not the case.
