The Elements

Lighter in the dark 1/165 f4.375 ISO12800

Out of all four elements, I feel like fire is the only one I don’t have a connection to. I don’t really find myself moved by fire that often, so I wanted to challenge myself by using fire and my subject. I don’t know if it’s particularly moving, but I’m actually really happy with how this turned out. I’m very satisfied leaving this as my last photo blog for the semester.

Gratitude

My little brother, Ronan 1/4096 f4.625 ISO1600

When I think about gratitude, I think about the people in my life, and the person I most often feel the most grateful for is my little brother, Ronan. Despite being four years apart, we’re basically like twins. He understands me better than most people, and I love hanging out with him. He’s my best friend in the whole world and I am always grateful to have him in my life.

Who Inspires You

My dad, Özgür Ercan 1/20 f4 ISO12800

Although there are a lot of people who inspire me, for this photo I decided to capture my dad. He’s someone who will do anything and everything for the people he loves and cares about. When he’s passionate about something, he pours his entire self into it, which is something I strive to do. I took this photo of him outside in the garden, where he works everyday on bonsai and his other plants. He’s a very weird guy (in a good way), and I love him very, very much.

Your Habits

My hand, holding a disembodied strand of my hair (bleached) 1/165 f4 ISO6400

I was struggling with this prompt at first, mostly because I think that habits are hard to realize if they’re your own, but then I realized that as I was thinking, I was twirling my curls around my fingers, something I admittedly do fairly often. At first I tried taking the picture using a piece of hair currently on my head, but it was a little too hard, so I decided instead to use an old strand that I cut off last year when my hair was dyed. Using the camera with one hand was tricky, and looking back, there were probably more time efficient ways to have taken this photo, but I still think it turned out alright.

Serenity

Our garden, filled with bonsai, succulents, and other various plants

For this week, we were asked to take a picture based on what serenity means to us. My idea of serenity is probably sitting alone and watching cartoons for hours, but that would make for a pretty boring picture, so I instead opted to take a picture of the garden, which is my dad’s place of serenity. He spends most of the day outside listening to music and tending to his plants. He’s recently taken up bonsai, which he finds really relaxing.

#NoFilter

My stepmom, Elina, at dinner

This week, we had the freedom of photographing anything we wanted, so long as there was no editing or presets used. I decided to take a picture of my stepmom, Elina. I really like this picture, I think the warm colors look really nice, and I like how it’s perfectly focused on her face.

Small, faceless statue

Anonymity is often associated with facelessness, so I decided to take that literally with this week’s picture, and capture this small, faceless ceramic statue.

Trash

Toilet, mid-flush

I’m not sure if a toilet constitutes as trash, but I tried to capture the concept of making something pretty out of something not so pretty. I’m pretty satisfied with how this picture came out.

White Balance

Flowers on my dining table

For this picture, I chose pink and purple flowers and captured them using the shaded white balance. I’m really happy with how the colors turned out, and I like how the dark purple in the bottom left flower is cancelled out by the orange white balance, creating a bright pink.

Weight or Mass

Paintings my dad bought at a yard sale resting on a table my dad also bought at a yard sale

I wasn’t really sure which direction to go for this prompt, so I decided to try to find an interesting composition that looked heavy and light at the same time, which I think I feel I mostly accomplished. I think if I were to take this photo again, I would remove the background and leave the blank wall behind the composition.
