Introduction + Reflection

How do you creatively and truthfully portray a significant person, group, place, idea, or issue in the community?

For our last project in our junior year we were challenged to profile an interesting person that is engaged in a researchable issue today. We were challenged to become journalists and learn techniques from learning how to interview someone to creating a magazine article. This was by far my favorite project that I’ve done here at Freestyle Academy and I’m so grateful for the opportunity of learning how to become a journalist. I really loved this project, partially because I chose to profile my grandfather, a survivor and refugee of the Partition between India and Pakistan, and partially because I fell in love with Adobe InDesign, the software we used to create our magazine.

Documentary Profile

My grandfather, Raj Khanchandani, was just seven years old when he was forced to leave his home in Sindh, Pakistan. He and his family faced many challenges when they migrated to India. He suffered a culture shock; from learning a new language to making new friends, he felt disconnected with his peers. Many of them didn’t understand how hard he and his family had to work just to build a life for themselves. Despite the struggles he and his family faced when moving, he has accepted the past and is looking forward now. My grandfather has taught me many things, but one that has always stuck with me was his view on humanity. “Man is a man you know, people are people, that doesn’t mean they should be disrespected. We respect each other and we should be friendly with each other, we should be polite with each other also. That’s the way it’s supposed to be.”

Design

In Design, we started learning the basics of Adobe InDesign and worked on strengthening our use of the Principles of Art and Design in our work. Our main project was to create an advertisement based on our profile in English. In addition to InDesign, we also used Adobe Illustrator to create our own graphic design elements and Photoshop to touch up any photos used in the ad as well as to create a transparent background.
