Narrative Visual Perspective in Digital Media

Multi-Layered Art Project:

In Digital Media we were challenged to create a stacked wood art in Illustrator that then got printed out and assembled. I chose to do a cherry blossom branch as a memory of the great times I had during cherry blossom season when I lived in Japan.

Multi-Layered Art

When I was living in Japan, Sakura season, or cherry blossom, was my favorite time of year. As we were working on our designs for this project I thought back to my time there and was inspired to create a Sakura branch. My mom loved our time there and always talks about it so I wanted it to be a gift to her as well.

It was tricky putting everything together in Illustrator and understanding how the wood would cut certain parts. I had to redo that process a couple times before submitting it to cut. When it finally came out I was in awe of the detail I was able to pour into this project. It was really delicate because some of the branches were really thin but I was able to add detail all throughout the branches and each cherry blossom. If I had a chance to print it again I would make the branches a little thicker so they would be more sturdy to support the smaller cherry blossoms.

Overall, I am really happy with how this turned out. It was gratifying to see the finished product knowing I had put a lot of effort into creating this masterpiece. I have a lot of appreciation for artists that carve wood by hand. I was able to design what I wanted to create in Illustrator and then a computer was able to laser print it out. I can only imagine how long it would take to do everything by hand. I am grateful that we were exposed to this art and I hope to create another stacked wood art in the future.
