Photo Blog: Facial Symmetry

3 photos: The middle is the original photo of myself, the one on your right is the 2 left sides of my face put together, and the one on your left is my 2 right sides. That being said, only the lighting really changes...
We were tasked to show symmetry by messing with our faces- however, I feel as though for my face the different sides don’t seem to pop out so much- as you can see, they have been edited as shown by the highlights and illogical lighting, but still, it’s mostly that I have a slightly thinner left side, but that’s about all that really stands out…

Photo Blog: Culture

Close up picture of a mellophone for the mouthpiece, with highlights running across the yellow pipework.
For this picture, I wanted to do it about some kind of music- but I do normally do oboe related pictures often, and I wanted to change it up- and talk about marching band, which is also integral to me. That being said, the low light settings and my apprehension to ISO really messed up the focus here… so for a revision, I’d really like to do this some time later, with better lighting; not only for the shutter speed being more forgiving, but also with a better aperture that would allow for more of this mellophone to be in focus.

Photo Blog: Exit

An old, rusted bridge is surrounded by a black wire fence and lots of over grown flower bushes.
This is the bridge at the back of my old middle school- which in one way, may be seen as a sappy, metaphorical figure as not only does it serve as an entrance/exit, but it also arches over a concrete chasm (which, technically, is just an overgrown waterway, not too intimidating at all.) But on top of this, I feel as though the weeds and fence around it frame this bridge exceptionally well- it’s lucky that since the school doesn’t use herbicides around the campus, it allows for these accidental spatial juxtapositions.

Photo Blog: Geometry

A shot of a net structure meant for climbing around on, with the whole view tied up with ropes.
I wasn’t sure of any places to take photos when I first set out for this shot, but I decided that a picture from inside of this rope structure created a mess of different shapes all around, as they provide footholds and such for children to climb around. The result is a composition full of texture created from soft rectangles.

Photo Blog: Freedom

Open shot of the sky, with few clouds, with lots of trees in the suburbs below.
I was pretty conflicted for how to show “Freedom,” so I was fist looking around for a higher place to take a photo from, or some kind of way to shoot from a claustrophobic area into an open one. I ended up opting for this wider open shot though, and hopefully the open blue gives a sense of *ah* liberation and freedom… or something….

Photo Blog: Leading Lines… in Food

Relatively low angle photo of a wooden cutting board with some garlic further back.
I found myself hard pressed to find something for this shot… and originally was planning on taking photos of various stick snacks, particularly Pejoy and Pretz sticks. (And for the sake of argument, Pejoy is a far superior sweet stick snack to Pocky.) Instead, I opted for a picture of a wooden cutting board, as there were lines to lead to a focal point, though I’m quite dissatisfied… The aperture and lighting could have been much better for this shot.

Photo Blog: Stranger

Looking down the line of a school, heavily shaded with lots of overgrown vegetation on the right side.
This was a challenging prompt, and so for it I decided to choose to show something unfamiliar. This shot of my old elementary school would have been something I remembered well, considering I went there for most of my life, but I never actually remembered taking any classes along this line… so the area is not totally “stranger” to me, but in some ways, it is.

Photo Blog: Serenity

For this prompt, I chose a photo from an old shoot i did around downtown- when normally I go out specifically with the prompts in mind. Despite the bland color and plain cookie-cutter quality of these houses, I thought it spoke out “No news is good news…” which seems like a fittingly peaceful, serene message.

Photo Blog: Lighting

Box with a sort of milky film over the front, showing a bunch of plushies inside.
I didn’t really know what to do here- I was looking for a dark picture to take with the speedlight, since I had only worked with portraits and didn’t want to do a portrait for this picture, so I took a picture of a box of old plushies under my bed hoping that the speedlight would help expose it better. I’m not sure I liked how it came out… Though I have some ideas for speedlights and may redo this prompt in the future.
