In this unit, we explored the world of Lyrical Essays and other writing of the sort, through books like Claudia Rankine’s “Citizen” and standalone essays like David Foster Wallace’s “Consider the Lobster.” By weaving poetic techniques into essay form writing, many authors find that they can create engaging works that tell something meaningful, like with American racism and the irony of Maine’s lobster festival, respectively.

We then went on to create our own lyrical essays, as well as videos to go alongside them. For mine, I ended up creating a footnoted piece that resembles spoken word poetry, based on the the hate that red delicious apples garner around the internet. My production was relatively simple, being just a video recording of the essay with multiple angles- but I definitely could’ve set up better angles for it in hindsight.
