Composition

In our weekly photo blog, one of the weekly challenges was to take photos that focus on and implement compositional techniques in photography.

    Center Frame Portrait

The goal of this photo was to compose it to be center framed. In the past and often we tend to stick to the rule of thirds which places our center of attention at one thing, but it is usually not at the center of the photo. I chose to light a candle and have my flame be my attention grabber which I think amplified the center frame composition as it is also the brightest part of the photo.

    Balance

The challenge for this assignment was to take a photo that is nicely balanced. As the holidays are among us I chose to take a picture of my family’s Christmas hats! I made it balanced by using symmetry down the middle. I placed two red hats on each side each saying naughty and nice with the tops of the hats folded complementary to each other. This furthers the balance throughout the photo.

    Leading Lines

I took this image to represent leading lines by following the rule of thirds, having my subject fall on the points of the rule of thirds. As well it uses leading lines in the clear area of the rock that leads to the subject. This follows on to show the leading line of where the subject may be looking. As well there is a pond as a frame as well as the leaves that are surrounding the subject.

    Symmetry Landscape

This week’s photo challenge was to capture something with symmetry within a landscape or view of the outside. I was lucky that my own backyard had symmetry in it as my mom designed it that way. As you can see the symmetry is centered by the fountain, making it the thing that catches your eye. As well, there is a common circular theme of symmetry as there is another ring around the fountain with the tiles as well as the rounded little shrubs on either side of the fountain and the spherical trimmed trees that fall behind the fountain on either side. As well there is symmetry with the colors…

    Rule Of Thirds – Motion

This is some of my friends doing a handstand contest, and I was able to catch the motion of them going into the handstand. You can see that they weren’t completely in sync, as the girl on the right has her legs together and forms a straight line, and the one on the left still hasn’t had her feet meet at the top yet. Both girls show lines which is interesting to look at, as well, the grass at the bottom of the image seems to have lines going towards the girls, I believe it was freshly cut. The motion of the girl on the right’s legs coming together is…
