Composition

In our weekly photo blog, one of the weekly challenges was to take photos that focus on and implement compositional techniques in photography.

    Viewpoint

This weeks photo challenge was to open your eyes to a new perspective by changing up your viewpoint. Now I decided to do this as well as actually capture a viewpoint as you can see. I hiked up Twin Peaks this past weekend in San Fransisco to see the sunset. I played with multiple different lenses as well as points to take my image. I finally decided on this image which I took at the top of the peak on top of a rock, gaining the most height possible. I especially like this piece because it isn’t just the city, it is actually more of the coast then the city…

    Color Theory

I took this photo on a hike I went on this past weekend. This weeks photo challenge was to take a photo and then edit it using color theory, specifically color grading to make it look like the image came out of a movie. Often I am not a huge fan of editing like this but it is very useful to set a certain mood or tone. I took this image and went in photoshop to adjust the exposure and saturation as well as adding a slight vignette on the border to add to the movie look, as if this was an opening scene to a show.

    Rule of Odds

This photo was captured at the last bit of sunset at Foothills Park, a place I like to spend time to clear my head. This weeks challenge was about following the composition with the Rule of Odds which you can see I did here as in both the vertical and horizontal thirds. The sky being the only light part in the top third and the reflection of that sky making another light on the left third.

    Rule of Thirds Emotion

This weeks photo challenge was to use the rule of thirds to capture the feeling of emotion. I loved this one as it was a bit of a challenge. I decided to photograph my bath bomb slowly fizzing out with an aura of different colors. I think this image honestly portrays a lot of emotion as it is colorful which makes you happy, and it is a bath bomb and baths are super relaxing and I mean I can almost smell the bath bomb just from the image! I made sure the colors were more vibrant in photoshop and make the background darker so that it is as if it…

    Fill the Frame

This weeks photo challenge was to fill the frame of the photograph completely, the frame is basically just the ends of the photo. One of the methods in the link that we got was to have two main colors keep it simple, and to also have your subject take up the most space. Obviously the red of the rose pops the most whereas the green leaves blend into the green and brown background. As well, the flower is in center and it is focused whereas the background is more blurred.

    Facial Symmetry

I ended up choosing the left side of my face that I like better when reflected. It was really fun this week to complete this challenge. We had to take a picture of our face and then reflect each side over so you could see how symmetric, or not, your face is. I found both sides of my face are definitely NOT symmetric, but with some fun photoshop editing I was able to make a symmetric face. I referred to them as my left face and my right face, since my left eyebrow is higher and my skin is clearer it was a pretty easy choice for me!

    Geometry

Geometry and shapes are found everywhere we look in this world. From the rectangle of our computers to the circle of our kitchen tables. This weeks photo challenge was to incorporate geometry into our photos. I chose to take this picture of the bottom of one of our outside seating chairs to show geometry. As you can see we have a repeating triangle-ish shape and it is repeating in a circle so two elements of geometry there. I thought this was interesting and a little less basic then just having a standard shape. As well I thought it was interesting to see and notice how an artist or designer can…

    Leading Lines – Food Edition

This week’s assignment was a familiar one, leading lines, however this time we had to include food and have those lines be leading somehow to the food. I thought this would be super easy but it turns out getting a good picture was a little tricker than I thought. I chose a knife as my leading line and an apple as my choice of food. I chose to line the knife up with the middle of the apple as if I were about to cut it to act as a leading line of separation. I thought this was a unique way to show leading lines because it is like one…

    Lighting – Using Speedlight

This image I took using my Speedlight at Shoup Park. The model is my friend Amara. You can see that the Speedlight was effectively used as there is light on her face so it is not washed out by the brighter light coming from the sun behind her. We had a lot of fun taking these pictures and spent a lot of time experimenting and playing with our spotlights to get the perfect image. As well we made sure to use rule of thirds again as always with a composition photo, as you can see her body fills up about a third of the frame and her head is placed…

    Negative Space

I took a trip to the beach over the weekend and took this photo. The challenge was to incorporate as much negative space into your photo as possible. I thought the beach would be perfect as there were not many people there as the sun was going down. There is a lot of negative space seen in this photo in the sky as well as the darker empty sand beach at the bottom of the frame. However, the clouds and little bit of sun peeking through the horizon add an element of interest to this negative space so the photo is still intriguing and interesting to look at.
