The Multi-Layered Art Project required us to create some sort of physical art based on our worldbuilding project in English. We were given the option to choose between a lightbox, layered wood, or wooden rings. I decided to go with the layered wood, and I’m very happy with my choice. The first step was to sketch our ideas out, which took me a while. I ended up redoing and revising my sketch multiple times.

My main inspiration for this project came from my Worldbuilding story. The majority of my story takes place in the jungle, which is why a tree is featured in my piece. Fire also plays an important role in my story, as it sets the main conflict into action. This is represented in the three pieces at the bottom, as well as the flames bordering the bottle on both sides. The bottle outlining the tree represents a natural poison that is found on Earthfall, the planet where my story happens. Another inspiration was layered wood art created by professionals. When looking at these examples, I noticed that the good projects had a lot of smooth lines and intricate details. When creating my piece, I tried to make sure that I was incorporating these aspects.
I found the process of producing a 2D multi-layered concept into a 3D physical and digital production very enjoyable. It was unlike anything I’d ever done before, and I think it’s really rewarding to hold a physical rendition of a digital project. I also think it’s great that I was able to expand my knowledge of After Effects with this project, specifically how to work in 3D space. This includes things like lighting, shadows, and virtual cameras. My experience in Illustrator and After Effects has further enhanced my ability to produce all different types of media.
