Zenith

what is senior zenith?

Every year students at Freestyle are asked to complete a final project to research any topic of interest that shows what you have learned in the past two years or a new skill you would enjoy learning that reflects what we do at Freestyle Academy.

While this was my first year in Design I wanted to capture a hands on project as I felt we focused much more on digital art and exploring sewing could be interesting considering it was a hobby of mine from the past!

Zenith Process

Step 1:

Zenith Moodboard

To begin drafting for any Design project we create a mood board. Before creating the mood board we were asked to create a calendar with self set deadlines to ensure progress was made each week. At the time, I wasnt decided on a college yet and was in between two colleges which made me create two separate color schemes for my mood board.

Step 2:

After drafting what I wanted and getting inspiration off Pintrest I decided on my college (Go Hoosiers!) and went shopping at both Joanns Fabric and Micheals. Here I got diffrent fabrics, tapes, and fusion cloths. To prep each cloth I had to hand wash, dry, and iron numerous times to ensure that for tracing it would be the right dimensions!

Step 3:

After ordering my sweatshirt I measured the diffrent dimensions of how big I wanted the stencils to be and transferred the proportions onto a Adobe Illustrator file. Big thank you to Mr. Flo for helping me cut out the stencils as it was such a important factor in creating my final product. Once the stencils were printed out I traced them onto my fresh cloth.

Step 4:

After cutting all my shapes and letters I started sewing them onto the hoodie! The first thing I had to do was sew the pennant flag and the lettering. This was a challenge as the cloth was too thick for the sewing machine to go through therefore I had to hand stitch the letters onto the flag which was again difficult due to the thickness. However, after finishing the flag the other shapes were fun to sew on! It was important to remember which orderer the shapes were sewn on so the layering would be accurate.

During this entire process I documented each step for completing my college sweatshirt. I organized all of the pictures and videos into a slideshow which I also presented to Freestyle Academy. I had a lot of fun creating these slides as I added many elements to keep the audience engaged and for it to match the exact aesthetic of my project!

Reflection:

I learned so much throughout this process with the sewing and how to work the machine. I feel very accomplished as I finished my project early and was able to continue my creative visions with creating a tank top and bag. I am so glad to be able to bring this project with me for the next four years of college as I will definitely be impactful for me as I worked on this with my mom as she has so much experience with sewing and working on something together when I will be so far away next year I will have my hoodie that I am bringing with me.
