Introduction
In the Music Recording Project, students learned how to operate the music recording studio at Freestyle Academy. I reached out to a local musician, pianist and composer Paul Hammer. We first learned how to use the controls in the booth of the recording studio and what the proper etiquette is. Then we recorded three original pieces by Paul Hammer. After recording, we edited the audio in Adobe Audition before exporting. Then, we created an Album Cover.
Musician
Paul Hammer is a local pianist and composer. The three songs we recorded “For Anna,” “For Gwen,” and “Threads,” are all his original works “

Artist Statement
We wanted to learn how to produce music using the music recording studio here at Freestyle Academy. We worked with Paul Hammer, a talented pianist and composer, as our musician. This project was incredibly fun and rewarding. We got to listen to beautiful, vulnerable music, while also learning technical skills that will aid us in music and digital production in the future. We recorded 3 pieces: Threads, For Anna, and For Gwen, all composed by Paul. After recording, we edited the pieces separately. We first made sure to normalize the audio, and we faded in/out the beginnings and ends of the tracks. We decided that the music sounded best when we used the tracks from both the Acoustic mic and the Yamaha Piano internal recorder, so we combined both.
We are very proud of how this project turned out, and very thankful to Paul for helping us with this project. The music came out very calm, serene, and peaceful. It was very enjoyable to listen to the music while editing. In the future, we hope to continue music production, and explore the world of audio editing and sound engineering.
Message from Paul Hammer: “I’m grateful for the time and effort put out by Mia, Serenna & Mr. Flo during the recording session. At the end of a take I was asked what I thought and what I wanted to do next. Their relaxed and supportive attitude put me at ease and I believe helped produce a better result. I also thank Freestyle Academy for giving me the opportunity to help Mia and Serenna learn music recording and production by doing so. I hope I can continue to help Freestyle Academy in the future.”
Reflection
This project was very fun! It was eye opening and exciting to learn how the controls of the music recording studio worked. I feel that I have become more confident in my technical skills. I am also more comfortable using Adobe Audition. I am very grateful to Paul Hammer for sharing his music and helping Serenna and I out for this project. I hope I can use the skills I learned in the future.
