Hello, my name is Quinn Anderson and I’m a senior studying Animation at Freestyle. I will be attending Willamette University in the fall of 2022, and I plan on spending time at their Portland branch, Pacific Northwest College of Art. I’m honestly unsure of what I would like to go into, because everything interests me in different ways. Animation, illustration, design, and creative writing are all future possibilities for me. I think I have the most fun in the concepting process of stories, whether it’s writing, character designing, or storyboarding.

Project 1- Walk Cycle

The first colored digital animation I ever made was this walk cycle in my junior year. The character I animated is one of my original characters I had designed a while back. I had a lot of fun coloring the animation, as I avoided normal cell shading and used scribbles that are slightly different on each frame. I think it gives the animation a unique vibe.

Project 2- Storyboard

The Zenith Project represents a way for senior Freestyle Academy students to exhibit their creativity and passion to the highest degree, doing what they want in any manner they please. Last summer, I wrote a 30-page story based on a series I loved. Around February of this year, I started looking into rewriting it from scratch, as I wanted to turn it into an animation. I realized the Zenith was a perfect opportunity to do so, and therefore decided to make my Zenith a series of storyboards for the writing.

This video displays my Zenith Project and the thought process behind it.

Reflection

These two projects, especially my Zenith, have given me boundless respect for the work done by writers and animators. The reason I want to go into art, beyond anything else, is the way it makes me feel. Seeing beautiful work is a truly emotional experience and infuses me with so much passion for creation. I can see myself going into some form of concept work, such as storyboarding, character design, or writing.

I am curious as to how the professional storyboarding process looks compared to my own and what is considered a completed storyboard frame. I am also curious about what I should major in during college to pursue my interests most effectively.
