I was struck by these two cones in the parking lot as I walked into school. I thought they perfectly captured the idea of balance in this week’s photo challenge. They’re not exactly symmetrical (one of them is definitely more beat up than the other), but they fulfill the same purpose, despite their flaws.

Hometown
With the storming of December fully upon us, I was reminded of the true charm of NorCal: not the “fun in the sun” atmosphere that we see in SoCal and on TV, but the cozy, cold, and foggy aesthetic that perfectly rings in the arrival of the holidays. This is absolutely my favorite time of…
Black and White
I absolutely love the way that the clouds and the lighter sky work with the shadows on the overhang in this photo. I liked being able to use the black and white prompt to play with lighting and how it would appear under the filter. The upward-facing angle also focuses the eye on the changing…
Leading Lines
The tilt of the camera accentuates the lines of the roof in this photo. All of the different aspects: the lower overhang, the slanted bits in the distance, even the pipes seem to point forward and away from the camera. It helps to create a sense of sharp and distinct movement.
Love Story
I wanted to use these two pumpkins to convey familial love and mentoring those younger than you. The bigger pumpkin seems like a mentor to the younger pumpkin, guiding and supporting it until it, too, is fully grown.
Weight or Mass
I watched the small googly-eyed worm dangle from my friend’s mirror and was inspired to take this photo. I found the worm’s lightness and wiggliness amusing, and it is a good way of demonstrating going with the flow.
Symmetry Landscape
I used two bushes to create a look of basic symmetry, while a larger piece of symmetry (ie the street and trees behind them) are made asymmetrical due to the angle. I thought that this was an interesting way to reflect how perspective can be changed based on how you live and where you choose…
Warmth
I was taking photos when I noticed the absurd amount of noise on my camera. I took a random photo with my palm over the lens and realized how cool (or rather, warm) it looked. I thought that this photo conveys a feeling of simple and concise warmth, one that can be found inside oneself.
Mood
I wanted to use this photo to convey the mood of excitement of playing games with friends. My friend Sam is sitting quietly, but her expression and the lamp above her help to show that her mind is active and excited.
Rule of Thirds – Motion
This photo shows a fountain in motion in the lower left grid square on the screen. Because it is so prominent, it directs all of the focus to that side of the screen.
