LightBox Project

We had the opportunity to make a lightbox in Digital Media. Like in Film, there was a Pre-Production, Production, and Post-Production phase.

Pre-production:

The idea. Sometimes, I find coming up with an original idea to be the hardest part of a project! Below are my thoughts and sketches for my lightbox. Since we were in the narrative unit, it was extra fun that mine told a story.

Production:

After having a rough sketch, I drew my ideas in Illustrator, and then laser-engraved the files on paper. Assembling the pieces was a bit tricky because it was a challenge to visualize how the layers worked out and how far apart they should be layered.

Post-Production:

In order to show how the Illustrator file developed into a physical piece of art, we learned how to use After Effects to navigate spaces and make them look 3D. Although I faced many challenges along the way, I was blown away by how much was possible with After Effects and how professional it could look when done correctly.

Below is the video I made to show off my original illustrator files.

After we completed the assembly, we downloaded an app that allowed us to control the colors/brightness of the LED lights from our phones. I then did a little photo shoot:

Artist Statement and Reflection:

When I thought about what I wanted to do for my project, I knew that I wanted it to be purposeful and motivated. I wanted the light to enhance and really add to the project. I love Tangled, and so once the idea of floating lanterns popped into my head, I knew that was what I wanted to do!
It was an incredibly challenging project because I had never thought about something like it before. Creating layers and visualizing how they will look with light shining through them was tough. What made it even harder was the fact that all the pieces had to be connected to the outside edge, otherwise they would have nothing to hold onto and fall in. Despite these initial challenges, I had so much fun planning, designing, and assembling my lightbox. I love how we get to have a tangible product that came from digital art.
I will definitely be able to use these Adobe Illustrator skills in the future, especially for detailed projects. It is amazing how many tools there are that allow me to make exactly what I envision!
