Multi-Layered Art Project – Stacked Wood

Our multi-layered art project in Digital Media gave us the opportunity to work either alone or with a partner to make, as you can infer from the name, layered art. The layered art make the completed product look 3D, giving it more life and taking it out of the 2D dimension. We had a choice between stacked wood, a lightbox, or a 3D ring, and our theme was that the art had to be related to our worldbuilding project. With my partner Sky we chose the stacked wood and decided that first we wanted to draw Logan, the main character from our story, Tank Monkeys. Shown below is our completed product.

Final Product
What it looks like on Adobe Illustrator

Something I struggled with the most in this project was figuring out how the layering of the wood actually worked; I went through a very long process of trial and error with my partner trying different strokes, patterns, and cutouts on many layers in Adobe Illustrator. However, we managed to figure it out in the end thanks to the help of Mr. Florendo, and seeing the final product in all its glory made me feel proud of the work we put in(although it was a little late…).

In conclusion, our narrative unit this year was without a doubt our longest unit, incorporating so many different aspects from each class. Worldbuilding was huge, and I’m proud to say I’m finally(?) complete and have evidence of pre production, production, and post production. I had so much fun working with my groupmates on our story, and throughout I’ve learned so many different skills like how to make layered wood art, how to animate in 3D on after effects, and, well, I guess how to take better photos. Shown below is both the physical production process and digital production process, respectively in the form of a time lapse and a short AfterEffects digital assembly.

Time Lapse of the Build
3D Digital Assembly

I never had specific inspiration for this project, but I just thought that a medium close up of Logan would look super cool. Logan is the main character of my World Building, and this is how my partner, Sky, and I envision him to look like. Turning a 2D multi-layered project into a 3D physical and digital production proved to be much more difficult than I thought, and took me a couple months to complete. I think that the process of assembling the product in real life was fun, working with Sky to glue things together and such. However, the digital production proved to be the most challenging, having to figure out 3D cameras, layering(again), and countless keyframes.

After Effects Interface

Knowing Illustrator and After Effects in general have been extremely useful for me in producing all media types, as I have now conquered 3D space(hopefully…). Mr. Flo once said 3D is 3D because its 3x harder than 1D. I definitely see that now, but I’m glad to say I’ve been through the process and I’m now comfortable using these Adobe applications to the best of my ability. Showcased here are the pre production and post production of Logan, showing a digital 3D assembly on Illustrator as well as the actual assembly in real life. I hope you enjoy viewing my multitude of different creative products as much as I do!
