The Elements

Inspiration

By logann 50mm 1/50 f22 ISO200 My backyard has undergone a pretty significant transformation in the time I’ve lived at my current house. A few trees were cut down, large patches of grass were dug out, and the majority of the greenery was replaced with plastic tarps and cut granite slabs. But through the years, through the changes, this orange tree has endured as my backyard’s small piece of nature.

Low Angles

Composition

By logann 24mm 1/50 f2.8 ISO5000 This was a recently made Lego set and a cardboard art project I had made years ago. I shot from a low angle to make the latter object more imposing, and the former, empowered. In reality, the helmet is much bigger than the tree. Yet from this perspective, with the tree in the foreground, in focus, the leaves and branches reach higher than the helmet. It reaches even past the eye, my present and future growing further than the past.

Rule of Thirds Emotion

Composition

By logann 24mm 1/125 f2.8 ISO100 I placed the otter off-center to create a feeling of aloneness and separation, which worked with the lighting; I made sure it was placed a bit out of the lit-up area. The otter stayed on the shadowy side of the photo.

Color Without Color

By logann 50mm 1/50 f8.0 ISO4000 This is the only art piece my family owns, and by far the most colorful thing in the house. I wanted to make the photo an inversion of reality. While color grading, I made sure the painting became the darkest thing in the frame.

Sometimes it feels like there’s a wall between us, or perhaps a divide. Even so, he’s my brother, my greatest friend, my muse–although he probably wouldn’t like me to call him that. We may not always see eye to eye, but I always try to see us. And I’m sure, in his own way, he does too.

Inspiration

By logann 24mm 1/50 f4.5 ISO2000 I feel that there’s a lot of introspection required to refine a piece of music. Reflected in the mirror is the sheet music you spend time interpreting. You put hours of practice into figuring out the right dynamics, studying your past play-throughs in an attempt to get the best performance possible.

I also used a warmer white balance to evoke a cozy feeling. These buns symbolize both my Vietnamese heritage and my father’s role as my caretaker.
