Documentary

Intro

For the Junior Documentary Project, we were asked to portray a unique or interesting person, group, place, idea, or issue by researching, gathering sources, and developing a perspective about the subject’s significance. The English assignment used Adobe InDesign to create a magazine article, the Film assignment used Adobe Premiere Pro to create a documentary film, and for Design, we created a unique project using Adobe Illustrator.

Reflection

Something I really valued about this project was the amount of creative freedom we had with it. In film, we could choose any topic we wanted, and create a documentary film about it. I’m so glad that I choose something so personal and important to me, especially something I’m most passionate about; music. I’ve learned that I thoroughly have enjoyed the documentary film more than I anticipated. The editing posed many challenges, but it had more depth and interest that one might think. For the english assignment, I choose to interview my grandma. I’m so happy I choose to interview her, because in hand with just completing my English project, I learned new things about my grandma and the connections I have with my family.

Digital Media

In Digital Media, we used Adobe InDesign to make a magazine article out of the English profile article we had already written. I actually really enjoyed using InDesign, I would say that it’s one of my favorite Adobe applications to use.

Film

The first project we made for Film was the Mockumentary Film. Our goals for this was to practice filming talking head interviews, using the rule of thirds and correct lighting in the face. It was also our first time using an audio recorder, not just camera audio. This was a challenge to edit, because you not only have to edit the footage, but you have to also edit audio. I found the audio to be a big film when we first started, but I got a hang of it with a bit of practice.

For each interview, we needed to have a set of questions prepared, but sometimes we went off the script in case the conversation took a different turn. This is an example of some of the questions we had prepared for our first interview.

Nora Mason is a piano teacher with a strong passion for music and the connections it can bring us. She has experience working with special needs children and in elderly homes, and has witnessed firsthand the powers of music.

Aidan Greathouse is a part time singer and musician in the Santa Cruz local band, “Casino Youth”. He attends Santa Cruz university where he plans to major in psychology.

Mimi Zarkover is a long-time close family friend of Liad, who had a remarkable connection to his story.

Liad Ofek is a coma survivor with a unique connection to music through his recovery. He enjoys being active, through biking, running, or even swimming. He found that music has helped him connect with himself and his family.

For the documentary project, I want to thank Mia and Jessie for all of their hard work making our documentary. It took a lot of collaboration and long nights. I also want to thank Mr Greco, Mr Flo, and Mr Taylor for helping me out with these big projects.
