In my family, mochi is a food we eat a lot in the winter, especially near new years. Mochi is a common new years food in Japan, and comes in the form of soups called ozouni. The ozouni’s differ in flavor and ingredients depending on which region you live in. Oshiruko is another way to eat mochi during the winter. Oshiruko has sweet red bean paste as the base instead of a salty broth like the ozouni. I personally like both of these foods equally.

In order to create balance in this photo, I focused on tonal balance. The bowl and the mochi are very dark in color. To make sure the dark colors don’t swallow the photo, I balanced out the colors by using lighter objects (me and the sweater) and a lighter background. This way the 2 contrasting colors balance each other out and help me create a bright overall photo.
