
The sin that inspired this picture was anger. I used chess pieces to tell the story of the gold king who hated the silver king, and waged a war in order to kill him. When I was younger, I used to play “story chess” with my brother, in which anything goes as long as you could make up a story to justify it. In other words, it was totally allowed to have a bishop jump from a white square to a black one because they were going through a bad midlife crisis, or have a pawn elope with the opposing side’s knight. Because of that, I’ve always loved stories with chess metaphors, and making this picture reminded me of that.
