This is something that has been in my kitchen for as long as I can remember. The little glass bowls and cups on the ornately decorated stand are all no longer than my pointer finger, and they have ceremonial use. The elephant-headed figures depict the god Ganesh. We celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi every year, which honors that god. Although I do not believe in the god or the religion, I will always respect the tradition. The festival is, at the end of the day, less about religion and more about family. It’s the one day of the year when we can all gather together in our traditional Indian clothes and eat and celebrate together.
