Narrative Perspectives in Design

Product Logo

For this project, we created a fake company to create a product and merchendise for. I chose to create a fake publishing company. I wanted to create products that you might find when you first walk into a book store.

To begin this project, we created a mood board. We used Adobe Illustrator to put together a collection of inspiration photos. We created a color scheme and also used text to describe our idea. My inspiration for this company were the “Frog and Toad” books.

My main product was a book bag and my side items were post-it notes and bookmarks. We used Pexels to find images and create our mock-ups.

I wanted my products to be about reading. I chose to include a book bag, bookmarks, and post-it notes. I wanted to include items that you would find in the front of a bookstore. For the color scheme, I wanted to do earthy colors because these are what I associate with reading. So I chose green, orange, and brown. One of my favorite book series when I was a kid was Frog and Toad which is why I included a frog as my logo. I wanted it to be clear what the product was so I made the frog reading a book.

To create the logo, first, I sketched my ideas on Adobe Fresco on an iPad. Then, I created the final logo on Adobe Illustrator using the Cintiq. To create the products, I used Placeit. I found mockups of the products I wanted and placed the logo onto them. I also included a fake website for my company. For the tote bag, I wanted to include additional details around the logo. So, I drew some leaves around it. One issue that I wanted to address with the post-its. The purpose of a post-it is to write on it, so I reduce the opacity of the logo. This way, the logo would be visible, but it would not interfere with the visibility of the writing. To create the triptych, I added up the dimensions of all three products and the margins between and around them. One problem I encountered was that the colors of the three products did not match very well. The tote bag was too dark in comparison to the merchandise around it. The greens of the different products also did not match. So, I edited the photos to change the colors and changed the mockup for the tote bag.

Book Jacket

Book Cover Moodboard

When her sister, Sasha, runs away into the allegedly haunted forest, Val, a rebellious teenager must leave her city behind and attempt to find and reunite her family. This story takes place in a steampunk inspired country called Galentine which is ruled by a wealthy upper class living in the North. Val and her family live in the south bordering the forest and often illegally enter the forest for food. When Sasha gets caught, she runs away and Val must follow her. In the forest, they discover a secret society of spider worshiping people.

For this project, we used Adobe In Design to create a book jacket for our World Building story. I used Adobe Photoshop to draw what I imagine the spider gods in our story to look like. We also created fake quotes about our books to go on the back cover.

Movie Poster

To create this poster, I used Adobe Photoshop. I found a picture of a forest for the background which I combined with a drawing that I created and changed the opacity of them both to blend them together. I also found some references for the people and spiders on Pexels. I traced the silhouettes and then colored and shaded them in. I used a complementary color scheme to match the book cover that I made. I also used a lot of dark colors to give it an eerie mood to match the dark fantasy genre.
