Narrative 1

The Visual Narrative Project was a unit in which we learned about Storytelling and the medians in which they are told. Through art and music, through interpretation and Storytelling. We learned all about it. We used Adobe Illustrator along with Protools to mix around and learn how to create some impressive art. In English, we learned the importance of how to tell a story with some tips and tricks on the Hero’s Journey, along with common writing techniques to make our stories pop. In Digital Media, we messed around with Adobe products and many different kinds of image editing to break down how professionals create banners, art and logos. In Animation, we learned how to do 2D animation to create characters that really look like they are moving. Overall, this unit was insanely fun, as we got to toy with many things and many medians that otherwise we wouldn’t be introduced to for free.

In English class, we were given the opportunity to create and record a short story to tell. We were also challenged to create Album art similar to how bands and artists create art for their stories.

The assignment in English was to create a short story using audio. My inspiration for the story were thoughts and philosophies I’ve had about the weird reality that might be sooner than we think. A world where we upload our brains to machines and lose what makes us human. We forget all that made us sad, all that would make us feel even the tiniest bit uncomfortable in a search for utopia. Along the way, we lose our humanity and are jealous of those who still have it. I valued how we were able to make a recording to tell the story how we envisioned it read. It was super cool to create art to go along side it as a little omen of our ill fated future.

We created many illustrations in this unit to show our strength in Adobe Illustrator. Here are some of the few we did in Digital Media.

My inspiration for this project was a hero from the game Heroes of the Storm known as Nazeebo that a streamer I like plays. I’ve been watching him for years and despite whatever changed, and whatever meta was most important at the time he stuck with his hero. This is a inspired piece of one of his emotes of the champions. The Simplistic design I went for was to show how a simple hero can be played so many different ways and despite everything that can be changed, it all comes down to a couple lines to really make the character who they are. A few struggles I had was coming up with an idea for the Narrative Illustration, as I had far too many and tons of ideas. I ultimately settled with the current design due to the streamer I love finally reaching 100,000 followers. If I could change anything, it would probably be having a title at the top saying “TAZDINGO!” As it is the catchphrase of the character. I’m most proud of how I was able to recreate his emote from the stream into a simplistic design. 

In Digital Media, we did a unit on Music Production and were able to learn how to professionally sample music as well as edit stuff about it. For our Parody Project, we were tasked with creating a parody of a beloved song and sing our own lyrics. The goal of this was to learn how to remove vocals from audio and put in your own. Techniques we used were to input special kinds of filters to remove high pitched audio. We also used the fact that it was in mono to overlap the different tracks of music just the tiniest bit so that the vocals were unnoticably out of sync. With these two together, we were ready to remove pretty much all vocals in the original song and upload our own.

Its a dark place and it keeps getting darker

The Inspiration for this was simply that I was re-watching lord of the rings…again…while all star played as an earworm in my head. Sorry Howard Shore. I ended up writing these lyrics and thought they fit pretty well in the Gollum voice as song lyrics. It’s beautiful, Isn’t it precious?

For Animation this quarter, we were able to create characters and puppets to go along with our story telling. I ended up creating a mysterious dog named Burly, who was created by a witch. We were tasked to animate him along with a 3D version of the character.

We were also tasked with to create a lip synced animation of a character in a scene. I ended up using Tahm Kench (From a video game) as my character base, along with one of my favorite scenes from Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End.

(Please Read Mr. Flo:) We haven’t finished our Narrative Animation in class, so there isn’t much I can add here yet. I’ll email you if you’d like once this section is finished, but for now I can’t really add anything to here
