Narrative Visual Perspective in Animation

For Animation this year, we got started on learning the basics of creating 3D animations. We went from basic modeling, all the way up to rigging and fully animating characters into poses and actions.

We first got to work on creating basic models in Maya, and using the built-in Render software to bring light and shadow into the object we were making. I decided to try and make a Greatsword, using lots of polygons, but overall making it pretty detailed in the process. I also made a scarecrow character using a lot of Extrusions and mesh manipulation, getting my character to be even more detailed in the process. Finally, we worked on creating 3D assets and using Maya’s render engine to make Fire Hydrants look good depending on their style of mesh.

We then started delving into making living breathing environments. I created a Greek temple-style building in Maya, and then using Unity, made trees and other foliage to go with it. I realized I also needed some ground, so went back into Maya and created some ground that would work amazing in an environmental scene.

Putting all of it together, we eventually moved on to creating full 3D characters that were fully rigged and textured. I decided to make a hulking behemoth that lived on the surface of the sun as my first character, giving some detailed metallic rocks over all the green hellfire underneath.

Using Virtual Reality, I took some videos of doing poses with my character as well as showing off the walk cycle I had given it.

I also used Virtual Reality to provide some Motion Capture for my character, allowing me to upload it and put in the background for my character to stand in.

I really valued this whole 3D unit as my future career I hope to be in is 3D animation and the development of 3D assets. I found it really good that I was able to work for my hands at more 3D challenges and programs to become more advanced in my skillset
