Depth of Field

A landscape photo of a glass of water outside. The glass is on top of some rocks. Behind it are two blue pots of different sizes. The background of the photo is blurred to put focus on the glass.

For this photo, we had to use depth of field. Depth of field is a way to make a subject stand out by making the background of the image blurred/out of focus. I decided to try this out to bring focus to a transparent subject that might get lost in a photograph with a busier background. I decided that to create this effect, a glass of water would be a good subject. I tried out a few different backgrounds, and I felt like the rocks provided a good amount of texture. I also liked how they could be seen in a warped way through the glass. The depth of field effect is done using the camera, so all I did in Photoshop was apply a slight blur to the background to enhance the effect just a bit.
