Frame within the Frame

A landscape photograph of a yellow flower at the end of a stem. The stem is learning diagonally and comes from the top right corner of the composition. Behind the stem is a large green bush with lots of stems. Only the flower is in focus. Around the edge of the photograph is what appears to be a darkly lit wooden frame. This effect was created by taking the picture through the hole of a birdhouse.

For this photo, we were asked to take a picture that appeared to have a frame, without using an actual frame when taking the photo. I really like this prompt, and it was fun to come up with different ways to achieve this. I looked outside for a bit and realized that I could use the opening of a birdhouse to create a frame. I also needed a subject, and there was luckily a flower right in the center of the opening. I took a few different photos to try and get the straightest angle, although I did have to adjust it a bit in Photoshop, where I ended up making a few other edits. The first thing I did was blur the background a bit, mainly using masks. I felt this was important to make the flower stand out as the subject. Most significantly, I used the curves tool in a few places. Using the quick selection tool with a bit of feather, I created a mask around the flower and adjusted the curves to make it brighter so that it would stand out even further. I also used curves masked to the pieces of wood to darken them and make them look separate from the bush and more like a frame. I really like how the effect came out, but I think I could have been a little more careful when taking the actual photograph. The angle is still a bit off and I wish the flower could be just a little bit more centered within the “frame”.
