The prompt for this photo was “new beginnings” and we were asked to photograph circle patterns. I chose to photograph this cool ring toy I got when I was little. The toy is a single strip of metal bent into interconnected rings. When you shake it or position them right, the rings will assemble into a round shape that almost looks like a pumpkin. You can manipulate this shape to make it wider which can create cool spiral patterns. Before taking my photo, I experimented with wrapping the toy around different objects to make different patterns. I decided that the best setup to create circular/spiral patterns was to put it around an empty glass. I turned off all the lights in my room except for a lamp that I directed at the rings, to help them stand out. Then I experimented with different angles, and even tried putting the whole thing on top of a mirror. Once I got the photo I liked, I put it into Photoshop and used multiply and screen blend modes to darken the background and lighten the rings to further push the contrast. My goal was to make it unclear as to what the spiral was acutally made out of or what I could have even photographed to get this result. I’m quite happy with how I acheived this look. If I were to go back and make this photo again, I would want to experiment with different bright colors of light
