I used a non pressure sensitive brush to give a more uniform, almost cartoonish inking. These kinds of brushes are often used for animation to maintain consistency throughout the frames. Not unlike animation, however, I struggle with consistency, so I wanted to sort of convey this daily chaos despite the line’s uniformity.

One chunk of my mandala is jammed full of my doodles– the doodles that commonly frame my math homework and notes. Another section is of flowing seaweed, winding organically to look almost like fire. The part a chunk away from the center of the mandala portrays a gently serrated leaf that morphs into the peak of a mountain, the sun shining out from behind it. Finally the outermost section pictures a puffin awkwardly in flight, with its feet sticking out and a fish in its mouth alongside an Alaskan evergreen. All of these little images represent a core part of what I feel makes up who I am. Whether it’s my love for the deep ocean, backpacking to the tallest peaks, doodling in math class, or watching puffins fly awkwardly in the beautiful outdoors, all remind me of something about me that are the root of who I am, of which I predict will stay with me my whole life.
