Visual Perspective Digital Media

Intro

In the second Narrative Unit, we embarked on a journey in Digital Media to create a multi-layered piece of art. We had the option of building a multilayered lightbox, circle, or wood art. Although very different outcomes, they included the same skills and similar processes.

Multi-Layered Wood Art

Process Background

Creating a sketch on paper, I then translated it onto Photoshop in order to quickly assimilate to digital artistry. Especially since it is a very different process from traditional art. I then created the outlines on Illustrator for the laser cutter to read.

Inspiration

In my mind, Persephone had always been a symbol of beauty and strength. She was a goddess who found true love and pursued it because she knew herself and her heart well which was why she was able to pursue her dreams in the underworld. However, as time went by, there seemed to be inconsistencies with what I believed to be true.

With that in mind, I was inspired by previous students’ stacked wood art. I based mine on when Hades fell in love with Persephone at first sight. While Persephone played with the nymphs, however, Hades decides to kidnap Persephone on a flaming chariot. Meanwhile, Demeter negotiates with Zeus for the return of her daughter. However by that time she had already eaten 6 pomegranate seeds meaning she had to remain in the Underworld.

An Abduction of the Heart

For my piece though I decided to re-envision Persephone as the one in control, since she lived such a sheltered life due to her mother Demeter she lacked many goddess activities, but what if she had grown tired of that life. What if she wanted to escape and both Persephone and Hades had fallen in love simultaneously and eloped. The reason why Persephone holds the reins of the chariot while flames and flowers flow behind her and Hades.

Reflection

On Illustrator though, I still had trouble visualizing the items from the back. It can be seen in my final product. All the same, I think in doing this project, I was able to expand my way of thinking. This project was actually more difficult than I anticipated. All the same, it just showed me to be better organized always. And to truly pursue something I was interested in until the end.

It truly is a whole new world of trouble. One though, that I am very enthused to explore in the future and is now knowledge I can apply to new projects.
