Narrative Visual Perspective in Digital Media

Multi-Layered Art Project

For our Narrative assignment in Digital Media, we created a Multi-Layered Art Project. For this project, Freestylers had the option between paper light box art, 3D ring art, and stacked wood art. I decided to collaborate with one of my friends to create a stacked wood art piece. Stacked wood art is laser-cut and engraved pieces of wood that you glue together to create your project. We sketched out our main idea for the project; which is entirely based on me and my partner’s friendship and bond together with our two similar art styles and backgrounds.

The main inspiration for this project was to create a stylized piece that could fit together well between me and my friend Leanna. We worked on this project together and wanted to represent both of our unique art styles and habits. Both of our art styles revolve around anime which is something we are both constantly inspired by when creating drawings. As for habits, I would define that as characteristics we incorporate into art constantly. This is our reason for basing our characters around a galaxy with stars theme and a pond with flowers theme. Since we wanted to represent our close friendship, we decided on a symmetry and puzzle piece related structure to build our theme off of. We also incorporated a lily pad and a moon for our separate pieces to represent our sides coming together like a yin and yang. This yin and yang represents our togetherness even with our differences and our bond with our Chinese ethnicities.

I think through this project, Leanna and I were able to grow our friendship and were able to support each other when it came to creating our separate videos. Leanna was very helpful when it came to the process of creating the 3D digital assembly video, and for being a good time manager towards the whole project. I felt like I was able to help more when it came to the recording and the physical assembly process. With that, I felt like we were able to learn and grow our skills together.

However, I think we struggled with deciding how much we wanted to actually incorporate into this project. Although we worked well together, there were clashes between us when we tried to decide on how to layer each portion of our pieces. We also struggled with deciding how many details we wanted to include within our piece and how many layers we wanted overall. I think that I, myself, would try to think less ambitiously towards the project when it can become more overwhelming for my partner and unrealistic towards actually creating the piece itself.
