Negative Space

The prompt for this week’s photo blog was to “learn why negative space is so effective in photography.” A resource was provided to us along with the prompt, and I gathered from it that negative space can be used to separate a subject from its surroundings and emphasize certain elements of a photo. Using negative space can affect storytelling elements of a photo and give the subject some “breathing room.” In this photo, I attempted to use negative space to isolate the ring my hand was reaching for, and highlight the refractions and shadows that made the ring and interesting subject. The space also affects the storytelling element by showing that there is still some time before my fingers reach the ring, made evident by the space around it.
