Story Telling

Your Culture

A portrait photo taken outside in the dark. In the center is a lit, orange candle, situated in a chanukiah with its right side visible in half of the frame. The chanukiah is sculpted to look like a tree, with its candle holders being at the tip of each branch. In the background, a woman and a brown paper cup are barely visible.

For this photo, we were asked to take a photograph representing our culture. I took this photo in December during Channukah, a Jewish holiday that lasts eight nights. Each night, candles are lit on a type of candelabra called a chanukiah. Every year, my synagogue hosts an event on the first night where everybody brings a chanukiah to light. I took a lot of photos that night, but I liked this one the best. I think the lens flare effect from the flame looks great. In Photoshop, I didn’t have to do much to adjust the lighting, although I repositioned the image a bit to make sure the candle was as perfectly centered as I could get it.
