Humor

April 2023 – May 2023

Introduction

Following our reading of Kurt Vonnegut’s “Slaughterhouse Five” we were introduced to our humor unit, which encouraged us to produce some sort of humorous work. Ranging from standup, posters, and parody videos, we had many options for our final project in English.

Progress

Starting this project was a long process. I partnered with Lindsay McKinley, and we decided to create a parody of the classic Bob Ross painting tutorial. We started off with a very rough humor script that we would then use to create our video.

Following the script, we set up one weekend to film everything. We ordered Bob-like wigs and gave ourselves facial hair using face paint. Then we headed over to my neighborhood’s clubhouse to set up. Setting up was more difficult than we had thought. After a few trips of running back and forth from my house to gather more supplies, we were set up.

Filming this project was easier and harder than I thought. We had one camera (phone) set up as our main camera and the other we used as a handheld for more close-up shots. Getting the shots was pretty easy, but I kept forgetting my lines or laughing which made the process longer. Our trickiest shot was the reflection shot at the end, where I am looking at myself in the mirror and Lindsay is looking back at me.

In the end, I am very happy with this collaboration. Lindsay is one of my closest friends here at Freestyle, and I am very glad I had the opportunity to work on a project with her.
