Stacked Wood Art

For the Narrative Unit in Digital Media, I created a stacked wood art piece which entails producing a sketch of my design, digitizing those sketches in Adobe Illustrator, laser cutting the wood layers, assembling the project, and then creating post-production videos in After Effects.

Production

After sketching my design, I brought it into Illustrator where I had to figure out how the design would translate to be laser engraved. Each stroke shown here in my Illustrator file is a cut made by the laser.

Then, my Illustrator file was sent to the laser cutter where each layer was cut out of wood. I took those layers and hand assembled them with wood glue, as shown in my assembly video here:

The Final Product

Here is my final assembled stacked wood art! I am so proud of how it turned out and I cannot wait to hang it in my room and future college dorm room to decorate and remember my time at Freestyle.

To show a more detailed version of my intricate stacked wood art design, I brought the layers from my Illustrator file into Adobe After Effects, where I used the virtual camera to animate each layer coming together.

This was such a cool project and an amazing learning experience! It is so rewarding to turn digital designs into physical art pieces. I also was grateful for the opportunity to expand my Illustrator and After Effects skills, as this project taught me how to use the virtual camera which was so fun and something I will definitely use in the future!
