Meet the Podcasters

Ava Bennett and Mia Bassett are Mountain View High School and Freestyle Academy seniors and true ASB veterans. Ava has been in ASB for three years, and Mia has been in ASB for four years. Ava enjoys watching movies, hanging out with friends, and going to the beach. She loves being a leader and is very interested in event planning. Mia is passionate about leadership and finds herself leading the ASB class every morning as an executive cabinet member. When she is not designing the ASB website, she can be found spending time outdoors or fueling her photography addiction.

The time spent in ASB class at Mountain View has shaped who Ava and Mia are today. They have made lifelong friends and learned many important lessons from ASB, and decided to create the ASBroadcast to honor the special community that the class has provided and document its current magic.

Introduction

ASB seniors at the Homecoming rally

Looking back on our time in high school, one thing in particular stands out: our time in ASB. Why is our class so connected? Why do we invest so much time and emotion into our ASB events? We created the ASBroadcast to document how unique the class culture is and share our love for ASB with the world. Podcasting is a modern media that is an amazing way to spread thoughts and stories with a wide audience. We really liked the idea of sharing our ASB experiences through personal stories and interviews with our classmates. When developing this podcast, we had many inspirations that helped us develop our ideas. As seniors who are processing their emotions as we leave high school, we were inspired by the podcast Popo The Clown, in which high school students honored their hometown by following the story of their childhood clown. We also were inspired by the way that podcast included interview clips that were relevant and engaging. Additionally, during the planning stages we both connected over the podcast Anything Goes by Emma Chamberlain, and we hoped to emulate a bit of her conversational style.

Reflection

Working on this podcast brought us so much joy as we were able to sit down with many of our ASB classmates and share heartfelt and humorous stories from the class. We took on a significant challenge with this podcast when we included five interviews (not all of them made it into our final cut). Although scheduling these interviews was difficult, it was very rewarding, and hearing so many different perspectives helped us shape our analysis of the class culture. Our advice to future podcasters is to brainstorm what your podcast would be like in an ideal world and work to make that vision come true. We had the crazy idea during one of our planning meetings to have the ASBoyband sing our intro, and we were able to schedule studio time with them to make our vision a reality.
