Photo blog #44: Viewpoint

milo rathbun – composition In this photoblog, I was tasked with capturing a viewpoint from an odd perspective. I choose to use this wall of the ocean and beach as my substitute viewpoint. I positioned a glass with wanted in front of the camera and placed it far away to give it depth. I intended for it to look like it was underwater but for this, I would’ve needed almost a tank of water and much more space. So instead … Continue reading “Photo blog #44: Viewpoint”

Photo blog #43: Film Noir

milo rathbun – storytelling In this photoblog, I was tasked with capturing a film noir vibe in my photos. I started out by taking a photo of my subject in a very foggy rainforest-type location with an ominous background. After I had the photo I edited it in Photoshop and used overlays to add the effect you can see everywhere other than the subject. After applying the effect I didn’t like how it made the subject look so I added … Continue reading “Photo blog #43: Film Noir”

Photo blog #42: Small vs Large

milo rathbun – inspiration In this photoblog, I was tasked with juxtaposing the small and the large. Since I was working with my 50mm lens I wanted to use two relatively smaller subjects, a glass of water and a key. Although they are both small I was able to frame this shot with the key appearing to be bigger than the glass. I made sure that I had a high aperture so more was in focus and shot the it … Continue reading “Photo blog #42: Small vs Large”

Photo blog #41: Color Theory

milo rathbun – Composition In this photoblog I was tasked with creating a still that looks like it’s from a movie scene. On top of this, I learned about color theory which helps tie cinematic shots together and create an aesthetic. When I think of a movie scene I think of crisp colorful shots that are well composed. In order to add flavor to my photo I centered my subject behind a glass light and made sure it was blurred … Continue reading “Photo blog #41: Color Theory”

Photoblog #40: Long Shutter Speed Exposure

milo rathbun – Composition In this photoblog, I was tasked with taking a long exposure nighttime shot. I attempt this shot a ton of times and got a wide variety of results. I learned throughout that the slightest movement can affect the entire photo as you can see with the blur. Additionally, I messed around with the duration to find a nice medium between too dark and too light, which ended up being the third one on the right. Camera … Continue reading “Photoblog #40: Long Shutter Speed Exposure”

Photo blog #39: The Elements

milo rathbun – inspiration Since there has been so much beautiful rain recently I thought It would be the perfect inspiration for this photo blog. In this shoot, I wanted to use the reflection of light and water to create a cool-looking effect. I found this table with a Chinese noodle house in the background. The neon lights of the restaurant almost reminded me of a movie scene and I wanted to capture this emotion. The mixture of red and … Continue reading “Photo blog #39: The Elements”

Photo Blog #38: Rule of Odds

milo rathbun – composition The goal of this photo was to capture the traffic light as my rule of odds subject. A traffic light has 3 lights so it’s the perfect amount to really draw your attention. I decided to shoot at night because of the luminosity of the lights which also gave the lens a little bit of flare around the hotspots. Overall the blurriness and contrast between light and dark really draw your eyes toward the light and … Continue reading “Photo Blog #38: Rule of Odds”

Photo Blog #37: Seasons

Milo rathbun – storytelling In this photo, I am telling a story of the seasons changing. Since Christmas Is Approaching I thought something related to the holiday would be the perfect subject for my photo. I found this Christmas vine with a nice pop of color on the red flower. To make it stand out I made sure to take the photo at an angle in which there is a deep depth of field and a blurry background. In order … Continue reading “Photo Blog #37: Seasons”

Photo Blog #36: Graditude

milo rathbun – inspiration In this photo, I wanted to capture two things in my life that I am very grateful for. Firstly, My red 1993 Honda Del Sol. This car has been with me through thick and thin and the memories I’ve made with it contribute largely to the man I am today. It’s brought me closer to my father, friends, and helped me make new connections with people through a common love for “machines”. Secondly, I’m grateful for … Continue reading “Photo Blog #36: Graditude”

Photo Blog #35: Rule of Thirds Emotion

milo rathbun – composition In this photo, I wanted to use the rule of thirds to make the viewer feel loneliness. I arranged the photo so that two similar cars would be on the left side of the rule. These two cars are both red, similarly shaped, and model Ferraris. To contrast these cars I chose a black Lamborghini to go on the rightmost box of the rule. Since there is both an odd number of cars and a contrast … Continue reading “Photo Blog #35: Rule of Thirds Emotion”
